Remember the classic children’s song, “The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone…”? You may have learned it in kindergarten or preschool, but it holds an important truth – our bodies are interconnected in incredible ways.
The connection becomes especially clear when you are in pain. Yes, pain “travels” from a point of injury to various other parts of your body. Then you REALLY know that it’s all connected and just how linked everything truly is.
At the heart of this connection is your nervous system. When your nervous system is functioning at its best, so is the rest of you. But how do you ensure it’s working optimally? It all starts with a healthy spine and nervous system, which is why regular chiropractic care is such an important foundation for health. From there, it’s about making mindful choices to support your health and well-being.
Here are some simple things you can start doing immediately:
- Be aware of your posture.
1) Avoid ‘tech-neck’ by adjusting where you hold your phone when texting.
2) Sit up straight when driving, tucking your chin in.
3) Try to stand on both feet rather than slumping on one foot which sends your hips off-kilter. - Stand more than you sit. Make it a habit to stand up and stretch throughout the day. Click here for a few stretches Dr Jerry recommends.
- Walk regularly. Research published in The Lancet (June 19, 2024) found that people with low-back pain who walked regularly went nearly twice a long before their back pain returned as compared to those who didn’t.
- Ride your bike. Cycling not only boosts cardio health but also strengthens the muscles around your knees, reducing instances of knee pain and risk of arthritis later in life, according to a study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise Journal.
